Old Market and Farmers Market
With Laura being an architectural engineer, she tends to geek out on buildings. So what better fitting than to take her downtown Omaha to show her all the old, original buildings still standing that have an abundance of character. We cruised around the Saturday Farmer’s Market, which we forgot was even going on. We looked at a few vendors booths and just wandered around aimlessly for a while.
Heartland Parade 2023
As we were wondering around downtown, we had no idea the Heartland Pride Parade was going on. It was packed full of people walking floats, trucks that were decorated and a lot of companies being represented that are involved in the LBGTQ+ community. It was really nice to see everyone come together for the parade.
Heartland Pride began as a task force in the fall of 2010. Today, Heartland Pride (United in Pride) is a non-profit, charitable organization. Our volunteers, board members, and committee chairs are comprised of proactive people from all walks of life. We understand the importance of including our allies in our journey and helping our communities keep the pride in Pride!
The Durham Museum
You can’t come to Omaha and not visit The Durham Museum. I’m so glad we did go and check it out, we saw the lunch box exhibit. It showcased all the lunch boxes throughout numerous decades, from the first lunch box crafted to present day. It was a stroll down memory lane from when we were kids and we got a new lunch box each year for school. Laura loved the trains that were there on display as well as many other exhibits.
Lauritzen Gardens
Another place that I knew Laura would enjoy was Lauritzen Gardens tucked in near I-80 and the Missouri River, downtown adjacent. Lauritzen Gardens is the nation’s premier botanical garden for its ability to impart beauty, awe, and knowledge about local-to-global natural worlds. It was a very hot and humid morning but we survived, some more than others. We cruised around the gardens checking out all it had to offer. Glad we got to show her these beautiful gardens.
Prospect Hill Cemetery
Some people love old cemeteries and can just walk around looking at headstones. We are those people and Laura was all about it, she loved it. It really makes you wonder about these peoples lives and family. We decided to go over and check out Prospect Hill Cemetery heading towards the Florence area of Omaha. If you love history, especially Omaha history, I highly recommend checking out this cemetery. A lot of the people who pioneered Omaha are buried here.
Omaha Food
Of course Laura wanted to check out a lot of the places I had told her about for years here. Nebraska, we have great food and the best Beef. Naturally we took her to our favorites for lunch and dinner, we didn’t eat breakfast out this trip. We hit up Little King Deli & Subs, a local favorite for their sandwiches. We took her to Alpine Inn, if you know, you know! They are known for their chicken as well as their little critters that will grace you with their presence if you’re lucky. Last but not least, we took her to our favorite steakhouse, Farmer Browns Steakhouse out in Waterloo. Worth the drive and wait if you go on the weekends.

Memorial Park
Memorial Park near Dundee area of Omaha had the famous V-J Day in Times Square statue on display for a limited time while Laura was here. She was down to go check it out and the park as well. We drove over there and got to capture this huge statue on display and it was just as good as it was in the pictures. This statue was on tour and happened to stop in Omaha, glad we were able to capture this in person and show off this beautiful park to Laura.
